US Visa Photo in Singapore 2026: DS-160 Size, Rules and How to Prepare It Online

If you are completing a DS-160 in Singapore, the visa photo is one of the easiest parts of the application to underestimate. A photo may look fine on your phone but still fail the upload because it is not square, too large, saved in the wrong format, or cropped with the head at the wrong size.

This guide explains what to check before uploading a US visa photo online. It is for photo preparation only; it does not determine whether you qualify for a visa or whether an embassy or consulate will accept the final image.

US Visa Photo Requirements at a Glance

The U.S. Department of State's official photo requirements say that visa photos should be in colour, taken within the last six months, in full-face view, with a neutral expression and both eyes open.

The head should measure between 1 inch and 1 3/8 inches, or 22–35 mm, from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head. For a digital image, the head should occupy approximately 50–69% of the image height.

RequirementWhat to prepare
ShapeSquare
Digital dimensionsMinimum 600 Γ— 600 px; maximum 1200 Γ— 1200 px
File formatJPEG (.jpg)
File size240KB or less
BackgroundPlain white or off-white
RecencyTaken within the last 6 months
ExpressionFace the camera, neutral expression, eyes open

These are technical and composition requirements. The U.S. Embassy or Consulate where you apply makes the final decision on whether the photo is acceptable.

DS-160 Digital File Requirements

When you apply for a nonimmigrant visa with the DS-160, the form will ask you to upload a digital image. The Department of State's Digital Image Requirements currently specify:

  • square aspect ratio;
  • dimensions from 600 Γ— 600 pixels to 1200 Γ— 1200 pixels;
  • JPEG format;
  • colour in sRGB colour space;
  • file size less than or equal to 240KB.

Do not confuse a printed 2 Γ— 2 inch photo with the digital upload file. If you also need a printed photo for your interview, it must be prepared separately on photo-quality paper. Check the instructions of the embassy or consulate where you will apply, because some locations may ask applicants to bring one printed photo.

If the DS-160 confirmation page shows an β€œX” where the photo should be, the upload did not succeed. The Department of State says you should follow the embassy or consulate's instructions; in some cases, you may need to bring a compliant printed photo with the confirmation page.

Face Position and Background

A correct file size does not make an unsuitable portrait acceptable. Before exporting, check the image itself:

  1. Your full face is visible and you are looking directly at the camera.
  2. Your head is centred and not tilted.
  3. Both eyes are open and clearly visible.
  4. Your mouth is closed with a neutral expression.
  5. The background is plain white or off-white.
  6. There are no strong shadows on your face or behind your head.
  7. The head occupies the correct proportion of the square frame.

Glasses are not allowed in US visa photos under the current composition guidance, except in very limited medical circumstances with supporting documentation. Do not wear sunglasses, headphones, or accessories that hide your facial features. Religious head coverings may be allowed if the face remains visible and the covering is worn daily for religious reasons.

The photo must not be digitally enhanced or altered to change your appearance. Avoid face reshaping, beauty filters, artificial skin smoothing, or replacing facial features. A technical crop or resize is different from changing the person in the photograph, but the final image still needs to look natural.

Common US Visa Photo Upload Problems

ProblemWhat to check first
File rejected immediatelyIs it JPEG, square, and within 600–1200 px?
File is too largeIs it over 240KB? Export a clean JPEG with moderate compression.
Photo looks stretchedWas a rectangular image resized instead of cropped to a square first?
Head looks too largeCompare the head height with the 50–69% digital composition range.
Background looks greyUse even lighting and a plain white or off-white background.
Confirmation page shows an XThe upload did not succeed; follow the local embassy or consulate instructions.

Change one thing at a time when troubleshooting. If you change the crop, background, compression and colour all at once, you will not know which change fixed or caused the problem.

How to Prepare a US Visa Photo from Singapore

You have three practical options:

Use a professional photo service

This is the safest option when the source photo itself is difficult: uneven lighting, a busy background, uncertain head size, or a child who will not stay still. The Department of State also recommends using a professional visa photo service.

Take a suitable photo at home and prepare the file yourself

Use a plain background, front-facing light, a stable camera position and a neutral expression. Then crop to a square, export as JPEG, and check the pixel dimensions and file size. Keep the original photo so you can produce a clean export again if the first file is rejected.

Use GetVisaPic for technical preparation

If your source photo is already suitable and you mainly need a square crop and a digital file prepared for a US visa workflow, you can prepare a US visa photo online with GetVisaPic. Inspect the result yourself against the official requirements before uploading. No tool can guarantee acceptance by the U.S. Embassy or Consulate.
